Concealment
Some photographers create portraits that purposefully hide or disguise sections of the image. Rosanna Jones conceals facial features by overlapping and rearranging parts of the photograph. Wallace Juma partially conceals the identity of the sitter by physically working onto the collaged photographic image. The textile artist Jose Romussi uses stitch and collage to conceal part of the photographic portrait. Pablo Thecuadro creates intricately cut collages from his fashion photographs which often conceal part of a face or figure.

Why I decided to choose Concealment
The one main reason I chose concealment is that the whole thing is a mystery. If you conceal an object there is the mystery of finding out what that object is, along with finding where they concealed the object. But you can conceal multiple things not must an object, you can conceal your face or body. Figuratively you can conceal anything a lie, a truth, because of that fact there are multiple ways of concealing something. An example of concealing something like a location using steganography (concealing a file, image, video or location in an image). Due to this I thought it would be fun too see if I can conceal something and how well I did it and the ways I can do it. In the description of concealment they are very intrigued on the face, I think this is due to the face being more intricate than anything other object as also if you conceal a face you conceal their identity and any chance of a description of that persons face becoming known. There also are multiple reasons for covering a face, it might be due to a deformation of the face or something on the face.
Initial ideas
- Conceal my face with a snood or mask (use multiple of different masks)
- Use my face to conceal something
- Try steganography (to see if it works and for fun) and use my face as the hidden image
- All of the above but on my whole body
- layer the concealment of my face and body
Initial photoshoot (based on my initial ideas)
These photos are based of my first idea in the list. Concealing my face with a snood or mask.

Photography trip
On this trip we went to Tate modern a gallery filled with exhibitions of art and photography. We specifically went to a Dora Marr exhibitions. Dora Marr to my knowledge was only acknowledged before as Picasso's girlfriend. Now critics have looked at her work of both photography and art and decided that her work was worth a lot to art and photography.
In the trip we mainly looked at Dora Marr's work as that had a variety of different styles and concepts. Dora Marr did use concealment in her photos, but to add to that already concealed photo I only took a picture of part of the photo as then it adds more mystery to it.
On the way to Tate modern I took photos of me walking, sitting down standing still only of my feet as then I can record my journey but also conceal the specific location.

First named artist: Rosanna Jones
Rosanna Jones from the work I have seen has a lot to do with concealment but in a mixture of different ways and sometimes combining two or three different techniques. Most of her work involve some sort of interference with the model with post edited photos where they have ripped or rearranged the fragments on the picture to conceal their face.
These photos conceal the body of the models but you can see and sense a deeper meaning in the photos like they represent how broken they are.
My response
These photos I made are edited following the same technique as Rosanna and I tried two different things.
On the left I used the lasso tool to create irregular shapes that I cut and copied to make it different from Rosanna but simple.
On the right i used the polygonal tool to get crisp and precise line which again I cut and copied to make it similar but still different as Rosanna manipulates her photos once they have been printed.

Photoshoot in Response
In this photoshoot I got the idea of using refraction and reflection from one of her images due to then you don't see anything straight and clear. I just thought that idea was very interesting. During the photoshoot though I tried using the blur from focusing to add more effect to the whole premise. An idea I can do with the photos from this photoshoot is print them out and re-photograph them through a magnifying glass or a mirror something along those lines.
Here I put a plastic cup over the lens to do this effect. I decided to take a photo zoomed in and zoomed out as then you can see multiple of different things just in one photo.
Second named artist: Wallace Juma
Wallace seems to think of his work more philosophically about the plains of reality and what lies beyond it. To me this very interesting as not a lot of people think beyond the reality we know and live in. This relates to my topic of concealment as the reality beyond is concealed and he is trying to reveal that reality beyond which is different from the aspect of yourself concealing something, it makes it like some sort of mystery that he wants to figure out
At first glance these artworks don't look all that nice, but after a while you can see a difference between the different artworks. Some you can differentiate by the emotion concealed within it some you can tell by the style he did it which tells a different story all together. To me his artworks show people a side of humans that we don't usually and want to see. This is the reason I like his work as normally people try to show this side of humans through editing but he made his work with the emotion he is trying to portray.
Visual response
Here I just used the brush tool in photoshop to draw on my face similar to Wallace Juma's work as they both have lines that obscure the face.
A photoshoot in response
This relates to Wallace Juma's work as the bars are acting as the black lines to conceal the face only this is of writing in the wall
Third named artist: Jose Romussi
These two photos are post edited with embroidery but both have very different embroideries it is like he is using their hair as a way to give them there face with the one on the left being more crazy looking bot hair and the embroidery but on the right the hair looks nice so the embroidery is nice.
